Proportional Relationships Quiz – 7th Grade Practice

March 19, 2026 Martin Laune

Proportional relationships are one of the most important concepts in 7th grade math. They show up in unit pricing, map scales, recipe conversions, speed calculations — and in nearly every algebra problem that comes after.

Getting comfortable with proportional reasoning now will make 8th grade algebra and high school math significantly easier. Here is what you need to know and how to practise it effectively.

What are proportional relationships in 7th grade?

Two quantities are proportional when their ratio stays constant. If you double one, you double the other. The constant ratio is called the constant of proportionality (often written as k). On a graph, a proportional relationship always appears as a straight line through the origin.

The key skill is distinguishing proportional from non-proportional relationships. A non-proportional relationship may be linear (a straight line) but does not pass through the origin — meaning the ratio changes depending on the values you pick.

Types of proportional relationship problems

Seventh grade tests typically include four types of proportional relationship problems: tables (find the missing value), graphs (identify or draw a proportional relationship), equations (write y = kx), and word problems (unit rates, scaling, percent change).

Word problems are where most students lose points. Practise reading the problem carefully, identifying the two quantities, and checking whether their ratio is constant before writing any equation.

Strategy to solve proportional relationship questions

Step 1 — Identify the quantities. What two things are being compared? Step 2 — Calculate the ratio for at least two pairs of values. Are they equal? If yes, the relationship is proportional and k = ratio. Step 3 — Use k to answer the question: multiply or divide as needed.

Ace My Quiz lets you practise all four problem types with immediate AI feedback. Each wrong answer comes with a step-by-step explanation so you understand the reasoning, not just the answer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a relationship is proportional from a table?

Divide the y-value by the x-value for each row. If all the ratios are equal, the relationship is proportional. If any ratio differs, it is not proportional.

What is the constant of proportionality?

The constant of proportionality (k) is the fixed ratio between y and x in a proportional relationship. In the equation y = kx, k tells you how much y changes for every 1 unit increase in x.
